TFF I am right there with you on being excited that the OC is not Matt Rhule, although I think having him on th eteam is a good thing in the transition. When i did some research i foud this quote aboute Scot Loeffler, "One of the reasons the Lions didn't want to lose Loeffler is because he's considered one of the bright young offensive minds in football. Before joining the Gators, Loeffler received overtures to join two other pretty good offensive coaches — Lane Kiffin, the new head coach at Tennessee and Steve Sarkisian, the new head coach at Washington."I am excited about having an OC that is highly regarded in the nfl and college as a great young football mind. Also as a former qb coach he should bring another dimension to our offense that we lacked while Al Golden was here
Rhule did a nice job for both Al and Daz at other non-OC responsibilies. He's a consumate professional. He may have been handcuffed by the micromanaging of AG, but I didn't want to have to find out next year if he wasn't. Since the LB position is taken for, as is the recruiting coordinator spot, I just don't see a suitable position coach job available on the staff for him.
TFF,this is the best news you have posted in the last four months…to include the hiring of Daz and Heater! what has been the problem with our beloved Owls the last three years? the offense! now we have a guy who will put our playermakers in position to make plays – i am so excited. this makes up for the lousy recruiting class in spades.
Kent,I agree. Today is a great day to be a Temple Owl. This indicates to me that SA has his stuff together enough to put the right guys pushing the right buttons. He said Heater is head coach of the defense. I hope he makes Scot (one T, for Temple) head coach of the offense and SA concentrates on being CEO and motivator. That's how all great organizations are run.
Love the move, and that TU football keeps making noise. Thomas I also saw the Lane wanted him and I love the fact tat we have some names that are relevant around the country in college football. +1 for Addazio on this hire. Oh yeah TFF lets get to sb nation- just throw some scores up there for basketball like all the others and you will do great- plus the message board will really take off…Cause this site is the front line of Tu football and you could do much for the program if you were there…
Thanks, Ant. I do this as a labor of love and just hope to cover my wireless computer bill with the donations but I promise I will think more about SB Nation.I have always loved the singular design of those sites.Bottom line is I know Temple football is a 365-day-a-year job for the kids who put the uniform and want to give them whatever support I can.
All bets are off if the new OC tries to run a spread offense here at Temple. Kent says that the offense has been the problem for the past 3 years… I'd say that the offense has been the problem for most of the past 20 years. We've fielded some pretty good defenses that were just overtaxed because the offense could not sustain drives. I don't think Temple can consistently recruit players who can most effectively run the spread. I am reminded of Army trying to run the spread offense (not to mention Temple under Bobby Wallace) and the enormous steps backward both programs took trying to run an offense they didn't have to horses to run. Golden's East Coast, ball control offense was a perfect fit for the talent level we've historically been able to get.
OK, now I am excited! Can't wait until Nova!!!
TFF,OK,Urban Meyer is now an Owl fan by definition. should we start taking bets on his first reference to our Owls on ESPN? or should we just sit back knowing with full confidence he won't let our ship go off course? how ironic – AG goes South to the U, and the Gators come North to us. i'm predicting right now that over the next five years Temple will enjoy a better record than the U. Why? because this is a real and present offspring of the Maimi vs UF discourse.
Kent,I deleted your "next level" comment before it would have been published because it had your phone number in it.Thanks for the offer, though.SB Nation is tempting.I like TFF where it is for now.Mike
Do you think these guys will let up the gas on Nova like AG did with a 24-14 fourth-quarter lead?I don't think so.Hopefully, the lead is 50-14 by the fourth quarter.
we need to re-work and tweek the DAZ mantra. "Our goals are to win the city and the local media, win the state, win our conference, and win bowl game. that is what we are trying to do."What is the first goal for all the BCS teams from Florida? Win the state! We need to schedule Pitt, Penn State, and Nova every year and beat the tar out of them
err, interesting screen name …. we DO schedule all of those teams every year, with only the exception of Pitt.
Mike, I'm not sure if you and your followers have noticed the recent Urban Meyer story. Apparently, the main reason for him calling it quits was the "garbage" that was happening with his program. The "garbage" he refers to is the more than 30 criminal acts associated with his players at Florida. Of course, this begs all kinds of questions about his own accountability, hypocracy, leadership, recruiting stands, etc. And does this not portend the same sort of situation with this almost, identical, coaching staff at Temple? This was one of my concerns with the hiring of Addazio. Al Golden valued good behavior and academics and put them first. He layed down the law early and often. There was a zero tolerance for bad behavior. Golden rightly believed that to allow such behavior undermined the ethics of winning and winning the right way. Obviously, Urban Meyer might have talked a good game, but winning was paramount and there was little to no accountability with regard to players' off the field behavior. I would be wary about how Addazio handles such things. I wonder if he gets it. Al Golden, to his credit, was on top of these things. I submit to you that Temple football cannot afford to devolve in such a direction after many years of establishing such a strong foundation.
NOVA is Northern Virginia
I'm a Gator fan and high school coach who stumbled onto this site by accident, but I had the chance to sit in a position meeting at Florida and hear Coach Heater with his DBs. I can honestly say he is the best communicator and teacher of any coach I have ever had the chance to hear. I'm looking forward to see what he does with the Temple defense this year. Go Owls!
Oh, how i wish we were back in the big east. Uconn, Pitt, Rutgers,Cuse, I would love to beat all of them now. In a way I feel an all sport move is coming soon in the next conf. shake–up- and that would be the greatest for TU
PPB,I think you can knock SA for a lot of things, especially his offensive acumen (which a lot of Gator fans have) but one of those things is not his dealings with young men. His Gators, his Hoosiers, his Orange, all loved the guy and his love back was tough love.I don't know who was responsible for those Fla. problems, but I don't think it was Steve.I worry more about his recent recruiting (the best player was a two-time JUCO transfer who might have problems getting those courses approved by TU), the Brumfield/Reid trade and his penchant for calling the dive play on first and second downs. That said, all will be forgiven with a 55-3 win over Nova.
Is all really foregiven with a 55-3 win? Really, 30 criminal acts by players would be foregiven. I don't deny that Addazio and Heater are outstanding coaches. I don't deny the palpable excitement SD brings to Temple football. But we are yet to find out what his standards are for running a football program. To be fair, he could very well be the kind of guy, like Golden, who standardizes academic and off the field behavior as well as playing performance. But I would be wary. The way he comports himself leads me to think he's strictly an x's and o's guy. He strikes me as old school. And old school can equal no to school. No to the rules. And no to off the field standards. Ironically, Joe Paterno is the greatest football coach ever, not because of all the wins, but because of the way he deals with young men / players. It's the same way he's dealt with his own children. Absolute accountability. Incidently, this is why he's lasted at Penn State and gotten all those wins. Paterno, and his pupil, Al Golden, are examples that if you run your program the right way, good things will follow.
by "all will be forgiven" i mean the Brumfield/Reid trade, some questionable recruiting decisions, a UConn dalliance, not criminal violations.I don't know SA's involvement in those Florida things, if he had any, or I really don't think anyone knows for sure.
Mike, I think S.A. gets a pass this recruiting season. As a South Carolina grad/fan I remember Steve Spurrier's first class with the Gamecocks being very mediocre. It's tough when approaching kids on the recruiting board who had been dealing with a different set of coaches. See Al Golden at Miami.S.A. earned his reputation as an outstanding recruiter in the most cutthroat league in the country. He will recruit well at Temple.
i truly believe this group of coaches can take temple to a national level. any idiot that thinks a city school cannot recruit needs their head examined. next year will be addazio's first recruit class. he needs at least 1-2 4star players and the rest 3 stars. with such a group they will improve dramatically. by 2013 they should be looking for running backs in the 4.4 range. i must admit they made a mistake on ryan brumfield.
