Excellent post and I couldn't agree more. If we can make a move up to CUSA, and I do thnk that is a step up, we should. Until then focus on making Temple the beast of MAC football. All of the raw materials are there.
For everyone who says this is a lateral movement from the MAC to the CUSA, I have three things to say:1) Did anyone from the MAC ever go to an AQ conference?2) Does CUSA have twice as many automatic bowl tie-ins than the MAC?3) Are the CUSA bowl destinations more attractive?4) Would Temple have to wait on pins and needles to see IF IT IS EVEN GOING TO A BOWL on the final day of an eight-win season in CUSA?The answers are, in order:NoYesYesNo
err, make that four things until I can think of a fifth thing (which shouldn't be too hard).
With the loss of Houston, SMU, and UCF, I honestly do not see a scenario where Temple would ever be worse than 6-6. And in that "worst case scenario"… we would STILL get one of the 6 bowl games! Onward to C-USA!!
I totally agree with all of this. I would add, too, that the officiating, is in and of itself, a reason for Temple to leave the MAC. I am convinced that the officials are hell-bent on Temple not winning the MAC. Those calls in the Ohio game are perfect evidence of this. In addition, reviewing the touchdown we got against Bowling Green really raised my suspicions. To the extent that Al Golden had any role in keeping Miami out of a bowl — even though Miami was bowl eligible — we owe him a big thanks, as I feel Temple was the last team chosen for a bowl. (It seems that the Little Caesaers Pizza Bowl would have chosen Western Michigan over Temple because of Western Michigan's proximity to Ford Field.I really hope Temple joins Conference USA soon so we can all see a great Temple-Southern Miss game next fall!
onward and upward, Michael. If I was the AD at Temple, today's Big East announcement would be the last straw.I'd walk into Ann Weaver Hart's office, convince her and Villanova grad Ed Rendell to come with me to a press conference announcing that we are cutting off all ties with Villanova. Then I would backchannel a less public pursuit of the ACC first, then CUSA second.Look what winning the MAC did to NIU.Not an attractive bowl at all.The MAC would kill our program if we stay in it.
AG had the rug pulled from under him. From his quotes after winning the sixth game, he thought he was going to go to a bowl. Then Miami decided three days later not to go to a bowl. No wonder he's looking at the UCLA job.Totally agree about the MAC officials. Just too much funny stuff happening in our MAC games not to side with the conspiracy theorists.Twelve (12) penalties to Bowling Green's two (2)?A catch that wasn't a catch leading to a decisive TD at Ohio?BP allowed to be mugged and punched on a 3d and 5 at Ohio with no flag?Ryan Alderman catching a third-down pass at the sticks and the ball CLEARLY being moved a yard back at Ohio?In order to win MAC games, we've got to win them 42-0, 41-3 and 34-0. We're not getting anything in a close game.
Totally agree with you on C-USA, and I've said that for a long time, for the same reasons as you. The Big East is done. The biggest argument people make against C-USA is what it would do to basketball, but it will be better because it would free up five games against weak teams, make that six when we drop Villanova.
our non-conference schedule of ND, PSU, Maryland, and RU plus Conf-USA would help us recruit four star athletes…, ESPN loves our market….., challenge for us right now is to persuade Conf-USA to extend an invite.., rumor is we are not on their shortlist….,but Navy is not a sure thing for the BE
Agree with the "new" state of CUSA after Houston, SMU and UCF leave. Temple should be able to consistently win 6+ games a year and worry more which bowl rather then going to a bowl. Here is some interesting info about the "necessary" SDSU the BE had to get. record over past 5 years 26-34, Teple’s record over the same period 34-26. SDSUs attendance figures are better but I don't know how accurate they are. Plus Temple's crowd has been increasing on average +3% the past 2 years….read Rutgers attendance dropped 6% this year and they "own" the NY market. SDSU was just brought along to keep Boise happy and no other reason. As for the MAC officiating and bowl selection, if you’re not an Ohio or Michigan team it always an uphill battle
Mike please drop the pretense of liking the MAC…No more post that talk about how much you like the MAC please…
I DO like the MAC. I don't like it for Temple. If the MAC had the same six bowl tie-ins CUSA had, I'd be all for Temple to be in the MAC forever.Heck, I'd change the name of the blog to MAC Football Forever. But it will always be Boise and Detroit and Mobile. No thanks.Still, WHEN Temple exits, I will follow the MAC more than any other conference save the one Temple is in …
'Say Anything' is one of my favorite movies (John Cusack is my fav actor), so I need to clear something up; the Boom Box scene wasn't the 'climax' of the movie, it didn't even get Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court back together, her father's legal problems did. But I do get your point regarding the Owls and the Big East. As far as the Owls and the MAC and bowl bids are concerned if the Owls ever handle their business in non conference 4-0 or at worst 3-1 plus win the MAC regular season at 6-2 or better plux win the conference championship I can almost guarantee that they will be considered for some of the more attractive at large bids.
Say Anything is one of my favorite movies, too. You are right. I should have wrote iconic instead of climatic. Fixed. As far as the Owls and winning the MAC, NIU took care of business and they are not in an appreciatively more attractive bowl than the Owls are currently. We have to ask what the "reward" is to winning the MAC and I don't think that reward warrants the risk to remain in the conference.
well put. win the BE and go to a BCS Bowl, win the C-USA and go to HAWAII! win the Mac and who cares? I'm going to New Mexico for three reasons:1. Not on my bucket list but it is a state I've never been; and,2. I love the OWLs; and 3. I can; and I did 'donate' a ticket and trip package
Have fun in New Mexico.Soak in the Owls posing around that New Mexico Bowl Trophy afterward, because I'm sure that's one of the things I will miss watching on TV.Also should be a great rendition of TV for Temple U after the game.I'm avoiding two things:1) Making a bucket list;2) Drafting my willPutting those two things off for another decade or so.(Of course, I'll probably get hit by a Mack Truck tomorrow… hope not)
Does a move to C-USA allow BB to keep the great non-conference games AND all the Big 5 games? HAving SJU and LaSalle in the A-10 makes playing the full B5 a lot easier on the schedule. Even with a move to CUSA, Basketball needs all the big non-conference games they can get but I would hate to do it at the expense of Big 5 games. And Vice Versa to be honest. Rock and hard place. It is probably their only option; I can't see the ACC accepting a city school into their blazer and boat shoe world.
yes, it does. LaSalle, SJU, Penn and Villanova (if you still want to play them) replace the four crappy MAC non-conference games. This move is NECESSARY to save football but boosting basketball's already great profile in an additional benefit.
I always want to play Villanova in basketball, only to beat them and their smug smiles. Man, not a whole lot left in CUSA after this BE fiasco though. This whole mess stinks. Independent days were better than this.
Mike, Do you know if the 5 new members have voting rights now that they are officially in Big East. I believe they do since at one point TCU was involved in discussion when adding new members. If so this would shift the voting power to the football side 10 to 8. I am wondering if this will no longer allow Nova to block Temple. I just saw that Pitino and Calhoun both again pushed for Temple for all sports.
I like Calhoun joining Pitino's voice. Hopefully, Fran can get Mike Rice (Rutgers) to do the same. I don't know about the level of loyalty the new schools would have to Temple.I know the Catholic voting block against Temple is pretty solid, sad and insecure. If Temple took this same stance when LaSalle wanted to come back to the A-10, Lasalle would still be playing with the Ionas, Marists, St. Peter's and Sienas of the world.Temple always welcomed competition.
C-USA's basketball profile is pretty solid among mid-majors. There are some really crappy programs (Rice and Tulane lately) but you have UTEP, Tulsa, Memphis, UAB that have historically been good to great over the years and definitely would provide Temple some good competition out of the gate. CUSA gets a bad rap but the programs in the top half are as good, if not better, than the top half of the A-10.Temple-Memphis would probably get CBS time on one game (likely as a regional covered game to part of the country)…that would do some good for both programs in getting exposure since both programs are "name brand" basketball programs. The other Big 5 schools outside of Nova would likely stay on the nonconference schedule anyways in order to keep travel costs down…and if the Big 5 were to collectively schedule in Drexel instead to make it a true "city 5" the nonconference slate is 40% done in one shot. Simply add a few profile games, games against other mid majors and the hoops schedule is set.In football, it likely doesn't help attendance significantly outside of the years when a hotshot QB tears up C-USA and their team comes into Philly…none of these schools are big travel contingent schools. However, it does help reputation…CUSA is a notch above the MAC and does have some decent programs (East Carolina, Tulsa, USM) even after the Big East poaches three pretty good programs away.
If CUSA is such an attractive destination, why are better schools aspire for the Big East? I''m not in love with the Big East but unless the ACC comes calling they are our best option for growing TU football. CUSA will not maintain 6 bowl bids if they replace thier lost members with MAC and Sunbelt schools. I'm still mad at the Big East but CUSA is an inferior option. I'd rather stay in the MAC. Besides if the CUSA and the Mountain merge we are trading Michigan and Ohio schools for Colorado and New Mexico schools that are not much better.
The MAC is going to kill our program. Our administration will not stand for a crowd of 10K on a Wednesday night on national TV for a winning Temple team. CUSA will never play on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Thursday, Friday and Saturdays are much better for football and CUSA plays almost exclusively on Saturdays and will farm out only a big Thursday night game. The MAC has to sell those Tue and Wed dates, which are killing Temple attendance.I don't see CUSA losing any of those five tie-ins and time soon.I don't see the MAC getting any more than three any time soon.
ECU Fan here. I'd love to have Temple on board to Conference USA. I'd also much rather see Louisiana Tech than Florida International, but news report are showing otherwise.
I'm an ECU fan, and I'd love to have Temple in Conference USA for all sports. I'd also like to see Louisiana Tech and UMass get added too.
