after hearing that fraud D'Onofrio made the final two, I have to wonder what went on beyond the walls of the interview process.I'm feeling a lot better that Rhule made it over D'Onofrio, but that's like saying I'm glad Jerry Berndt got the job over Ron Dickerson.Would have preferred Clawson or Cristobal or Bowles but evidently those three or Temple didn't like what they were hearing from one another.Didn't even go after Lembo, I'm told, because Lembo didn't apply.Geez, you have to recruit coaches like you do players.Not happy with the process.
I like Rhule and I think it will be a good, positive move for the program.1. He wants to be at TU. He helped build the "house of brick" His wife works at Temple. He was the lead recruiter for Golden and helped build the best team in years.2. The offense will immediately improve. Regardless of what you think of AG's offense, this will be a step up from Adazzio. Also, because it's Rhule, the new offense won't take too long to install, and without AG, we'll see how much they open up (I think AG has a tendency to be more conservative in play calling).3. Keeps Temple program together. These kids deserve a coach who wants to be here. They helped build the program and are passionate about the program. This shows that the administration cares for the players, which will only HELP recruiting in the future.4. This guy is not Brendt or Dickerson. Dickerson had no HC experience and little ties to temple. Rhule did not go 0-11 anywhere as HC. Rhule has paid his dues, going to the NYG will help significantly in terms of organization. 5. Guys like Les Miles and Pat Fitzgerald succeeded at higher profile places with no previous HC experience. That doesn't mean there won't be an adjustment, but Rhule has the pedigree and training to take a shot.6. The fact that people don't know Rhule outside of Temple means nothing. I remember that "people" thought Kotite would've been a great coach with the Jets and got a raw deal with the Eagles. People can be stupid.Sorry about the long post, but I really like this hire.
The issue that I have with hiring a players coach is discipline. They may love him but eventually someone will push the envelope to see what they can get away with. I hope they respect him as much as they love the guy. This may not be the case with Rhule, I dont know but I hope it is not the case. Its like your buddy at work who gets promoted to boss. How do they handle being in charge?
Matt would not have got my vote, but now that he's in (seemingly) I will cheer for him and his program. I wonder how much input the Board of Trustees had in this after seeing the interview last week? Anyway, welcome aboard Mr. Rhule, we wish you success!
Collateral damage. Bradshaw made a bad hire in Addazio. He made an even bigger mistake in saying "yes" to Meatball Marinatto. So no surprise that the candidate pool was poor. I will give Ruhle benefit of doubt.
I will give Rhule the same benefit of the doubt I would have given Daz, Cristobal, Lembo or Clawson: Seven wins.Seven wins against that schedule with everyone back and a little tweaking (Newsome to defense, for one) is not only do-able but mandatory.If Rhule gets me nine, I will start breaking the mold for a statue.Six or less and I will have serious doubts about him going forward.
This is an uninspiring hire on its face but only time will tell. I think the owls took a safe approach that might allow them to retain their existing recruiting class and hopefully build strong talent pipe lines in the area. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Rhule is able to deliver seven wins and doesn't get blown out in their opener against ND next season. I think the owls have the talent to deliver six or seven wins next year and its going to come down to Rhules ability to coach this talent. He's being handed a team with a talent level slightly below what Daz was given from AG but certainly one that can win over half it's games in a watered down BE. He's got a very young nucleus but if he can show progress throughout next season (something Daz couldn't do), win the games he's supposed to and lamd some stud recruits I'll be happy with the hire.
+1 on everything Tim said. I'll admit, the Addazio thing got me fired up, and has probably made me very defensive of hiring "outside," and more of a Rhule cheerleader than I should be (he doesn't have that HC experience.)BB is taking a chance on Rule. We took a chance on Golden, too. Young, relative unknown, to rebuild college football's 20yr punchline into a team. Golden took chances, trusting an unheralded "discipline case" to form the backbone of the offense. I really hope it works out as well for us, this time. With the big east disintegrating around us, I just feel like we need stability, someone who isn't going to jump ship. If this goes through, like everyone thinks it will, then I really, really hope Rhule hits hard and fast. Secures this class, goes after new recruits aggressively, assembles a dynamic coaching staff (some vets, some up-and-comers.) Something to send a message that we aren't a floundering program in a dying conference. I'm not a big fan of Heater, but the fact that he wasn't a complete ghost after Addazio bounced makes me think a little higher of him…and it was as much Addazio's terrible offense that doomed this season as it was Heater's D; I'm willing to get behind him staying. If we creep into a bowl game, I'll be happy with my decision to put on the Rhule pom-poms. If we look late 90's out there, then I'll belly up to the table and eat crow.
I don't like crow and we should do more than creep against this schedule. We will only be outclassed against ND and Boise. We should be in every other game.Chris Coyer, who I think beats out Juice for the starting job now, will thrive under Rhule.They will let him throw on first down unlike Daz who set him up to fail with all those 3d and long throws.

Temple is in a stronger football league than the MAC and, by leaving on their own, the Catholic schools cede the Big East brand to Temple and the Owl hoopsters still get to play their post-season tournament in MSG against Cincy and UConn and Larry Brown (SMU) and Steve Fischer (San Diego State).Owls will do better in both sports than the A/10-MAC hybrid.Villanova's football dreams are dashed forever. I think Nova drops football now.
