Temple football schedule (finally) announced

By Mike Gibson
That puff of white smoke coming from the Edberg-Olson Football Complex today was not exhaust from the train station above, but the rather important annoucement that the Owls’ 2009 football schedule has finally been released.
The Mid-American Conference released the schedule at 2:36 p.m. today or about 20 minutes ago.
Last year, they released the schedule on March 11.
Both years, the MAC was the last league to release season schedules.
The holdup?
Waiting for league braintrust to formulate various deals to keep games on national TV.

2009 Temple Football Schedule
Sep.
3 Villanova, 7 p.m.

19 at Penn State

26 Buffalo

Oct.
3 at Eastern Michigan

10 Ball State

17 Army (Homecoming)

24 at Toledo

31 at Navy

Nov.
5 Miami, 7:30 pm (ESPNU*)

13 at Akron, 8 pm (ESPNU)

21 Kent State

27 at Ohio, tbd (ESPNU/ESPN360*)

*ESPN Multiple-Game Selection Date

In one example, Miami was supposed to host Colorado. Kentucky wanted to play a game against Miami in Cincinnati, so that MAC had to find another league opponent for Colorado. They found one in Toledo.
That’t the way these things work.
Temple will open its season on Thursday night, Sept. 3, at Lincoln Financial Field against Villanova. That much we knew weeks ago.
What we didn’t know until today was exactly who the league opponents will be for the Owls.
They will host Buffalo, Ball State, Miami and Kent State.
They will visit Ohio, Akron, Eastern Michigan and Toledo.

  1. I love this draw. It’s extremely early to post predictions like this, but I don’t care. Here’s the breakdown. 1 v Vill, W 27-10 (1-0) 2 @ PSU, L 13-41 (1-1) 3 v Buffalo, W 31-30 (2-1, 1-0) 4 @ E. Mich, W 23-19 (3-1, 2-0) 5 v Ball, L 14-20 (3-2, 2-1) 6 v Army, W 30-9 (4-2) 7 @ Toledo, L 16-17 (4-3, 2-2) 8 @ Navy, W 27-21 (5-3) 9 v Mia OH, W 37-7 (6-3, 3-2)10 @ Akron, W 20-9 (7-3, 4-2)11 v Kent, W 16-12 (8-3, 5-2)12 @ Ohio, W 23-17 (9-3, 6-2)I realize this may be overly optimistic, but I definitely think it’s do-able. Let’s review:Villanova should be a gimme. Let’s just get out of Happy Valley healthy this time. Buffalo is a revenge game, should take it. East Mich is a joke. Ball St. is tough, foresee a loss there. Army has to be beat. Toledo? I see a slip-up there on the road. Rebound against Navy in another revenge game. Then comes November. You should sweep that month, no doubt about it. Tell me, Mike, am I drinking the Kool-Aid? I don’t think I’m THAT far out of line, although this forecast would be a best-case scenario. Now ground me.

  2. I’ll probably do something like that closer to the season but, after last year, I’m extremely gun-shy. I really feel comfortable with 21 of the 22 positions on the field. In other words, I think we’re definitely fielding better players at 21 of the 22 positions than we’ve fielded since (and including) the 7-4 1990. You don’t have to be Albert Einstein to figure out the position I feel LEAST comfortable with …. it also is the most important position on the field.I don’t think I’ll change my mind in the months ahead. You can look great at practice and fall apart in the games.Mike McGann was the greatest practice quarterback I ever saw, but he had a tendency to fall apart in the games.I’m hoping somebody steps up in the Nova game and makes all kinds of clutch plays and great scrambles to hammer the ‘Cats.Hoping.
