The Best Thing on TV: Bernie’s MAC Show

“Give the ball to The Franchise, that’s what I’ve been telling coach all along,” Steve Manieri seems to be saying to Bernard Pierce.

Mark Beier and the Toledo radio broadcast team threw some many bouquets in Temple’s direction Saturday night, you didn’t know which ones to catch and which ones to send to the niece’s wedding.
Beier talked about the size and the fierceness of Temple’s offensive line and the overall speed of the Temple defense.
Something Beier said in the fourth quarter of Temple’s 40-24 win at Toledo really caught my ear, though.
“I haven’t seen a running back of this caliber in the Mid-American Conference in a long, long time,” said Beier, whose radio call also streams worldwide on a MAC access channel with video.
Color man Tom Duncan agreed.
Beier was, of course, talking about Temple freshman Bernard Pierce, whose amazing recovery from being carried off in a stretcher last week in the Army game is nothing more than Lourdes-like.

BP’s numbers:
40 carries=game
212 yards=game
3 touchdowns=game
766 yards=season
9 TDs=season

Pierce rushed for 212 yards and three touchdowns and now has 766 yards on 135 carries, despite getting only six carries against Villanova. Pierce now has a team-high nine touchdowns and already has bettered Paul Palmer’s records for touchdowns (6) and yards (628) by a freshman.
Oh.
Did we mention Palmer finished as a runnerup to Vinny Testaverde for the 1986 Heisman?
Thought I’d mention that.
Temple has now won five straight games for the first time since 1979. The Owls (5-2, 4-0) are also in the MAC East driver’s seat, affirming predictions by both the New York Times and CBS Sportsline prior to the season.
Meanwhile, the Toledo game was a tale of two stars with bum shoulders.
One could play. One didn’t.
“It’s doubtful,” Temple coach Al Golden said when asked if Pierce would play Wednesday.
Five minutes later, in the same presser, Golden said: “I don’t have any doubt, Aaron Opelt will be playing quarterback on Saturday night for Toledo.”
Well, guess what happened?
Pierce’s broken shoulder was fixed and Golden’s doubt-meter was broken.
Or maybe Al was just playing possum.
Whatever, I don’t think Toledo wins that game with Opelt AND Pierce playing.
Then again, I don’t think Temple wins that game without Pierce.
That’s how good Pierce was.
When you have a running back like Pierce, you can manage the game off him and that’s what Temple quarterback Vaughn Charlton did so well on Saturday night.
Vaughn threw a nice touchdown pass that Michael Campbell caught, another ball that Michael Campbell probably should have caught for six (it would have been a really good catch, though) and another flair that went for another touchdown to Jason Harper, who only makes positive things happen every time his number is called.
Pierce went out for a blow late in the fourth quarter and they handed the ball to Lamar McPherson, who promptly went down on the same kind of play Pierce was falling forward for eight yards a pop.
“You can see the difference between Pierce and everybody else,” Beier said.
Whatever they rubbed on his shoulders this week, must’ve worked.
I wonder if they got the bottle overnighted from France.
Whatever, it was the Elixer the Owls needed and one they will have to keep in the medicine shelf the rest of the way.

  1. How's it going?I am one of the writers over at SPORTSMONARCH.com. I just wanted to say that I like your site very much and I'll be back to visit it. I was wondering if you wanted to exchange links so that we can spread some readers around. Let me know if this is possible.Jason

  2. I think we have to find another term, like 'St. Bernard' or something. Bernie's MAC show gives off too much of a morbid vibe, sorry.

  3. Hey Mike, I'm a big TU football fan out here in California, so I don't have anybody to share my enthusiasm with. I have some thoughts on the season, so I'm just going lay it all out here in one post.I've believed in Al Golden since day 1 and felt it was just a matter of time before Temple turned the corner. I didn't think it would happen this season, though. There some big question marks coming into the season. We knew the defense would be good, but how the offense be without Adam DiMichelle, Alex Derenthal, and Bruce Francis. There legit concerns about the O-line with losing the only outstanding lineman (and the leader) from a shaky line. There was no obvious go-to receiver with the loss of Francis. And we all knew that Charlton would be a step down from DiMichelle. As it has turned out, there were 4 unexpected developments that had brought TU to the front of the MAC this season.(1) the O-line is much better than anyone anticipated. Not only has Palumbo stepped in and done a great job at center, but the entire line is better across the board. It seems to be the result of the work ethic that Golden has demanded from his players. After most of these guys have been in the program for 3 seasons, all that hard work is now paying dividends and they have one of the biggest, strongest, toughest lines in the MAC (and you can include Maneri in that group).(2) Bernard Pierce. This guy is legit. You don't expect a true freshman to be this good, especially not at Temple. But, he's got the whole package: size to take the pounding, burst of speed to turn the corner, strength to break tackles, and vision to see cutback lanes. Plus, he has that ability all good running backs have to get that extra yard or two before being tackled if it is at humanly possible. (3) Jake Brownell seems like a great kid and I guess he makes them all in practice, but he was terrible in games. Finally, with McManus, the Owls have a kicker that they count on to make a 30 yard field goal. That's a huge deal. TU left a lot of points on the field last season simply because the kicking was so bad.(4) The MAC is terrible this season and Temple has just about the easiest schedule you could ask for. The bottom of the MAC is atrocious and Temple gets all 4 of the worst teams – Ball State, Miami, Akron, and EMU. I think these teams have combined two wins so far (one was against a FCS team). Not only that but Temple doesn't have to play CMU (clearly the best team) or NIU (possibly the second best team). The toughest games on their MAC schedule are probably Ohio and Kent, and they are somewhere between 3rd and 6th best in the conference overall. So, the stars have aligned for Temple this season. With the great O-line play and the running game that can control time of possession, it has made Vaughn Charlton's job a lot easier. Also, it has made the defense better, simply by giving them more time to recover between possessions. I was very pleased with the Toledo game (even if it was against their 3rd string QB), mainly because of Pierce's bounceback and Charlton's decision making. I think it was the first game I've watched Charlton where I didn't see him throw one pass that was just a terrible decision. His only real error was throwing the bomb to Nixon on the wrong side, missing the opportunity for 50 yd TD strike. But, also Charlton had one dropped in the endzone that absolutely should have been caught. Maybe Charlton is starting to gain confidence after having been able to recover from the bad start with the Villanova game. By the way, in retrospect, the Villanova game is probably not going to matter. It was the first game of the season, and it turns out that Villanova's probably better than half the teams in the MAC (FCS or not). The main thing is that it doesn't appear that they will need that win to be bowl eligible. With Akron and Miami still remaining on the schedule, 7 wins (at least seems imminent). Thanks, Mike.Go Temple!

  4. Jacob,Great post. I just deleted a long-winded answer.Short answer: Villanova didn't hurt us for any other reason that local credibility and attendance. Those are two big hits.Al Golden must win that game every year in the future.Other than that real bad taste in my mouth, I'm enjoying this year.Beating Navy would be huge from a credibility standpoint. So … let's beat Navy. …eight in the box, dare them to throw, leave Dominique Harris, J. Jarrett and Marquise Liverpool back there to cover anything in the air.Mike

  5. Steve,I think it's more of an honor to Bernie MAC than a morbid vibe, but I didn't see it as BP's nickname … more like a headline for a single time.Remember Paul Palmer's nickname?Boo-Boo.Maybe we can call BP … errBeep-Beep?

  6. Navy is the best team remaining on Temple's schedule and the game is on the road. I think Navy has to be favored. But, I think Temple has a 40/60 chance to win. Most of the Temple players were in the game last year at Navy, when Temple had the game all but one, except the stunning Key-are Griffin fumble. It wasn't even a fumble, actually. The lineman just ripped the ball out of Griffin's hands and then ran down the field in to the endzone. I've never seen anything like that before, when the running back was simply supposed to go down to run out the clock. It was unbelievable. Anyway, the point is that, I'm sure the players went away from that game believing they had given away a sure victory. So, they must have confidence going back to Navy this season, that this is a team they can beat on their turf. The other thing is that playing Army a couple weeks ago might be an advantage, because the Temple defense has already prepared and played against the option this season (just recently in fact). Navy's option is a little different than Army's and it's better than Army's but still a lot of difficulty of defending the option is the surprise factor. It's hard to prepare against when you face it once a year. So, maybe facing it the second time this season will be helpful. And this is a good, experienced Temple defense that's not going to be easily fooled. So, I wouldn't be surprised if Temple wins, but I wouldn't be too disappointed if they lose (as long as they don't lose like they did last year).

  7. If the Owls stay focused, stick to their defensive assignments, take care of the fullback and use their terrific team speed and pursuit on defense to string the pitch out sideline to sideline, they should be able to hold Navy to about what Wake Forest held them to … I would think that with BP outrunning the Navy secondary (let me check, does Navy have any state 100-meter dash champions? … err, that would be a negatory…) we should be able to get at least 17-20 points and a win.I feel a lot more confident against a team that can't throw than I do against a team that can …Then again, we can't throw all that well, either.Wish I didn't have to work.

  8. Mike, sorry, wasn't trying to be in conflict. I saw Shawn use the same line over at scout and it just doesn't feel right – you think Bernie Mac, and in lieu of his brilliant work I think of a good comedian that passed away. I like the idea of "Pierce-ing through the MAC" – BErnard's something special and I'm enjoying the ride – now we just need local media coverage!!!

  9. I hear you, Steve. We need to do something dramatic for media coverage, like beating a nationally respected team like Navy. Sad truth is while you and I might respect the MAC and teams like Toledo, the country's antenna, the Joe Schmoes, isn't up for any team in the MAC. I want it all, 10-2, beat Navy and beat CMU in the title game.

  10. Navy QB Dobbs is out for this game, and even though the backup had a deccent game against Wake Forest a week ago, he's still a step down from Dobbs. "So we've got THAT going for us (which is nice)" – Carl Spackler , caddyshack Owls 27, Navy 26 — Owls block a 4th QTR extra point a la Alabama a week ago … GO TU !

  11. I thought Alabama blocked an FG, not a PAT. Point taken (away, in this case) though.

  12. Nice Owls football article in Saturday's Washington Post, written by my colleague Camille Powellhttp://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/30/AR2009103002391.html
