Defense, QB come up small in Illinois

Proof positive that even a JC quarterback can routinely hit Rod Streater in stride.

Does an AVERAGE Division I-A (FBS) quarterback miss that wide-open Rod Streater for a touchdown with the Owls down, 24-17?

No.
Does an AVERAGE Division I-AA (FCS) quarterback miss that pass?
No.
Does an AVERAGE Division II quarterback miss that connection?
No.
Does, say,  West Chester University’s  Sean McCartney (who completed 36 for 44 for 447 yards in a win over East Stroudsburg Friday night) complete that pass?
Yes.

Let’s start the blame game for Temple’s 31-17 loss to Northern Illinois on the right foot.
The right foot was the defense, which returns six All-MAC performers.
No way a defense with more than half the MAC all-star team should yield 31 points to any MAC offense.
That said, I hope all of the Chester Stewart fans are happy now. I haven’t been one and that’s been well-documented here.
Temple won some thrilling games that didn’t need to be thrilling early because, in my view, Chester Stewart brought the Owls down to the level of competition, not up. Freaking Ball State put up 31 points on Central Michigan, but not Temple. Freaking William and Mary put up 34 points on Villanova, not Temple. Freaking Illinois put up 33 points on Penn State, not Temple.
Yet I would take all of the weapons around Chester Stewart (Bernard Pierce, Matty Brown, Joey Jones, Rod Streater, James Nixon, Evan Rodriguez, Michael Campbell, etc., etc.) over all the weapons on Ball State, W&M and Illinois combined.
So who’s fault is it when the offense underperforms?
I’ve been saying all season that Chester Stewart’s performance needs to come up a level or two or three for Temple to win the MAC title.
My detractors said to shut up, he’s got the Owls to 4-1.
I told them the Owls have got to 4-1 in spite of his consistent overthrows, fumbles and interceptions.
He proved me right today.

Yes.
It’s a simple pitch and catch, yet Stewart not only missed it on Saturday but he’s missed it on the other Saturdays and the Thursdays and Fridays Temple has played this year.

What concerns me more than Chester missing that toss was that Al Golden and Matt Rhule do not have confidence in the backups to make it.
If they can make that simple toss, they should be playing.
If they can’t, Temple is in trouble the rest of the season.
This is the week some hard choices have to be made at that position.
Because Al Golden made those same hard choices this year at about the same time, I’m confident he could pull the trigger again.
But will he?
One of the other guys should have a chance to try these weapons on the Bowling Green firing range.

  1. Not saying that I think Chester Stewart played well enough for us to win this afternoon (which he didn't) but to blame the loss to NIU aquarely on Stewart is insane, when the defense made the NIU QB look like a heisman trophy winner. ranted Chester missed a couple of WIDE OPEN recievers down field, but when your defense cogs it up like that today there's not much any QB can do. The only times NIU were foced to punt, they weren't really forced to punt. The first punt was a result of penalties and the second was just a team that had already known they had the game in hand. With all that said if a QB change gets us a MAC Championship this season, I guess that's what it would take. But a rematch versus NIU will have the same result if we can't stop the NIU QB (sorry that I couldn't remember his name).

  2. Chandler Harnish. If he plays for Temple, Owls win, 31-17.If Chester Stewart plays for NIU, Owls win, 31-17.Period.End of story.Al Golden, to me, has an easy decision to make this week.We can't go forward with this guy, only backward.

  3. It may pain everyoone to hear this but maybe Golden and his staff have NO CONFIDENCE in the other QB's on the roster.

  4. If so, those are two huge recruiting mistakes he's admitting to. ….Who recruited those two quarterbacks?Temple is going to have to start recruiting accomplished superstars on the high school level. The best predictor of future success is past success.Stewart or Charlton never lit it up in high school and it's no surprise that neither one is lighting it up now.Everybody says Golden is a great recruiter, then he should land one of those guys. That's what Adam DiMichele was at Sto-Rox and that turned out pretty well for Temple.Gerardi did light it up in high school. So, to a lesser degree, did Coyer.Put them on the field and give the other kids a chance.

  5. I agree with Mike on this one. Chester Stewart has been terrible this season and should be replaced. I also question if Al Golden has really "turned this program around". Rather, it seems the program has lucked into Bernard Pierce, who is a beast, but frequently injured and unable to play. When Bernard is not on the field this team looks completely different and mostly inept. Turning a program around is not just beating service academies or Villanova, it's actually defeating conference opponents on the road, winning the MAC, and winning a bowl game. Matt Brown is a nice back and will help this team score points against mediocre opponents like Army, but will have difficulty against quality teams like PSU and lesser opponents that turn Temple into a one-dimensional team by shutting down the passing game. This team would not go to the MAC championship today and without a healthy Bernard Pierce, it appears unlikely to occur this season.

  6. I wonder about BP.He looked great on that run that was called back (bogus hold, by the way), then he doesn't see the field, gets on the bike, walks next to the coaches and appeared ready to go back in ….He should have gone back in….BP, when he gets into a rhythm (like UConn and in the first half against PSU) is really unstoppable.Matt Brown is good.BP is great.Got to ride the horse, if he's healthy.Let's hope he is.

  7. Mike. Exactly right. Stewart isn't close to cutting it. He can't place a ball even NEAR a wide open receiver; that can't be accepted at this level. They've been winning despite him — until today. There is indeed a big problem on the squad if Coach G doesn't make a switch after what happened today. (Joe Jones made a nice TD toss a week or so back….)

  8. When Joey Jones throws the best pass of the season, you know you are in trouble.Just watched the game again and, although the defense deserves to be blamed, I would blame the DEFENSIVE SCHEME more than the defensive kids. You can't rush three and drop eight like Temple did all day and not have a good quarterback like Chandler Harnish gouge your defense.Chandler Harnish is a good Division IA quarterback. Is it too much to ask Temple to field a good 1A quarterback. I said Temple would miss Adam DiMichele the day he graduated. They haven't come within a galaxy of replacing him.

  9. I'd rather have Charlton back at QB at the moment rather than Stewart. I agree with you 100% on Chester. If it means to start Coyer or someone else, then so be it. Either way I think QB has to be priority number 1 on the recruiting trail, with secondary personnel a close second. It's one thing to bring in RB's and convert them along the way, but we need better secondary personnel as well. It was a problem last year and it's something that reared its head again on Saturday.

  10. I think the Vaughn Charlton ship sailed a long time ago. I'm hearing the horn for the Chester Stewart ship right about now. I hope the Mike Gerardi/Chris Coyer ship doesn't turn out to be the Duck Boat. I'm hoping for the Love Boat.

  11. Before all of you (fill in your own adjective) start clamoring for Temple to change QB's remember this little tidbit, for all of his shortcomings Stewart is the most experienced QB on the Temple roster. The next six games for Temple is huge if they run the table and NOT CHANGE QB's a more confident Stewart WILL LEAD TEMPLE to the a MAC title and the first bowl win since 1979… There's a reason Coyer and or Gerardi didn't win the job during the spring…. That opening 6 games that Temple has played was probably the toughest Temple has or will face in the last or next couple of seasons. Especially coming off the back to back tough games in Happy Valley and at Army, although the PSU game is becoming less impressive by the week. Anyways, Mike you yourself sort of named NIU the toughest team Temple has faced this regular season especially after Illinois did way more than just lose to PSU 28 – 22 beating them in Happy Valley by 20 points. I may have gotten off topic a little but, a QB change may seem the popular move right now, but in the long term I don't think it's the right one.

  12. If NIU was Chester's only hiccup, I would agree with you. Chester's been hiccuping all year (key fumbles in the Nova and CMU games, three INTs vs. Penn State, a fumble that wasn't reviewed against Army … but was just as clearly a fumble as the NOVA/CMU fumble, missed open receivers out the wazzou, etc., etc., etc.).How come Adam DiMichele never seemed to miss an open receiver? The only missed connections ADM had were dropped passes (Travis Shelton in the hurricane game comes to mind).Temple needs to upgrade that position now.I believe Al Golden has decided to make a change. I think it is the right decision.

  13. You would know better than I, but I would hope Golden looks at the big picture and doesn't make a change just for changes sake. Besides, until McManus missed the field goal to open the second half I thought Stewart played decent but when the game turned into a pinball match Stewart and the Temple offense faultered. A stop or two by the defense and it's a different game with not as much pressure on the Temple offense to get out of its comfort zone, ie Stewarts comfort zone. But enough about last week, bring on Bowling Green.

  14. Mike, did you see that Dodd kid from Rutgers? Not bad for a true freshman!

  15. The kid from Rutgers proved that a cold freshman can come in and light it up. This is a position where you either have "it" or you don't. I knew Adam DiMichele had "it" the first time I saw him. I knew VC and CS didn't have "it" the first time I saw each one. After three years, my instincts haven't failed me. I want to see either MG or CC have "it." I'm optimistic.
