TU recruiting: Nothing to get excited about (yet)

Ben Onett’s recruiting video is impressive.

I usually don’t write about Temple football recruiting for a couple of reasons:
1) The NCAA rules involved in what is considered a college “booster” or “supporter” are pretty vague and it’s just good judgment for me not to be involved in the process.
2) The NCAA rules about “verbals” and “soft verbals” are screwed up. Al Golden had a great idea about an “early signing period” meaning that the kids who commit within a certain time frame (say, the ones who already committed) cannot be contacted by other schools without a major penalty involved. That would reward hard-working staffs, like Golden’s and presumably Addazio’s, for making solid early calls and protect them against a BCS team swooping in and taking their recruits.
So I wait until the signatures are signed on the dotted line to talk about the kids.
Generally speaking, I think Temple University (or really any other) football recruiting is really nothing to get excited about until the first Wednesday of every February.
It’s good to see that new head coach Steve Addazio is targeting what he feels is a quarterback with the “it” factor in Benjamin Onett of St. John’s (D.C). He recently added a couple of defensive backs, Archbishop Wood running back Brandon Peoples, a punter and a backup placekicker.
All good, solid kids.
I’m playing the waiting game with Addazio, though, because, quite frankly, I was underwhelmed with his first class. Compared to the hastily recruited first class of Bruce Arians (Heisman Trophy runner up Paul Palmer, NFL pro bowler Tre Johnson, among others) it falls even short for a guy who had a month to put together a group.
I’ll give Steve the benefit of the doubt, but I don’t think we’ll get a Heisman Trophy runner up or an NFL pro bowler from this past February’s group. Just a hunch.
We had a three-time first-time all-state running back (Owen J. Roberts’ Ryan Brumfield) who WANTED to come to Temple passed over and a RB schollie given to a guy who is about the same size and a full tenth of a second slower in the 40 (Spencer Reid) who was an unimpressive honorable mention third-team All Central League player.
That was a WTF moment for me.
Everything I’ve heard, though, is that this guy is a great recruiter.
I hope the best is yet to come and, on signing day, we’re talking about a guy who is down to Alabama or Temple. Or Penn State or Temple.
Then he pulls out the Penn State hat, replaces it with a TU hat and says: “I’ve decided to take my talents to Temple University.”
I fully expect given everything I’ve heard, such a moment will happen soon with Steve Addazio.
At least that’s a fervent hope.
Congrats to all of the kids who have so far had the wisdom to pick the Owls, but I’m not excited about TU recruiting.
Yet.

  1. TFF,how soon we forget….several months ago when a few of us raised the red flag on this year's class you cautioned us. one class does not make a team, this year or next, and AG did leave us in good shape….., what we really need is back-to-back strong recruiting classes,'12&'13, defined by several four-star recruits. then we'll really know if Daz is all that and a bag of chips.

  2. well-said, Northern. I'm really warming to Addazio but I'm not a Stepford Daz follower. The belief is going to have be fueled by deeds. So far, the recruiting "deeds" are suspect. Name me one guy that turned down a BCS offer and accepted one from Daz. AG had a handful of those a year. Heck, his first recruit was one of those guys.

  3. Tre Johnson was years after BooBoo Palmer, and Palmer was a diamond in the roguh. And no one wanted Palmer. He was not selecting between Penn State and Temple. Same way Penn State was not knocking on Bernie Pierce's door. There is every reason to believe Adazzio gets kids with talent, so don't judge so quickly.

  4. Do you think we are more likely to beat the Penn States of the world with Spencer Reid in the backfield or Ryan Brumfield? To me, it's not even close and I don't buy the argument that "Addazio is a professional so he knows more than you" because I heard the same thing when Ron Dickerson was the head coach and when Bobby Wallace was the head coach. I really feel he didn't do his homework on Brumfield and the Reid thing is a real head-scratcher. If you don't think Reid has a CHANCE to be a starting and effective tailback for Temple, then don't give him a scholarship. If he thinks Reid can start, then I can question his judgment.

  5. Don,TFF,the prudent thing to do at this point maybe to let this class pass and let's see what this season will do for next year's class. give Daz a 'free pass' this year; let go of expectations, and focus on the most important three hours of the week for 2011. the Jury is out and we are the collective Judge in waiting..,, "can't wait" maybe our mantra

  6. Not to mention, Brumfield just won the state high jump gold, with a jump of 6'10". I don't see Reid having the ability to clear 4'… Good luck with that goal line leap. The whole thing just smells of politics. I don't have a problem with Reid being on the team, but to waste a scholarship on him, especially knowing how wealthy his family is.I'm with you TFF, it still bugs the heck out of me.

  7. My bad. Tre Johnson was part of Jerry Berndt's first recruiting class, not Arians'…Still, the point remains the same. Both gems out of hastily recruited one-month recruiting. Both Tre Johnson and Paul Palmer were high school superstars, as was Ryan Brumfield. Can't say the same for honorable mention all Central league tailback Reid.

  8. TFF,any insight on the 6'5 wideout who runs a sub 4.4 who committed for next year?

  9. Imhotep is much more known for hoops than football …. in a terrible league, the division Imhotep plays in is quite possibly the lowest level of football in the state. I'd like to see us sign more polished players who've caught 20 TD passes in good high school leagues.

  10. concur and thanks! but we stand behind the diamond in the rough…,

  11. Whats the deal with Juice Gringer, is he a player and is he ready to come in and start. QB play is the only thing holding us back from winning the MAC. Hopefully, Pierce did something different in the off-season to stay healthy. I would love to steal one from PSU and hope the Linc is fully of cherry and white.

  12. too many "diamonds in the rough" can get you fired … as I learned painfully with other Temple coaches.AG had a nice mix of getting projects (Alex Jackson) who projected and kids like Adrian Robinson (Big 33 MVP) and Kee-Ayre Griffin (Boston College recruit) who were coveted by the big-time BCS schools. I was hoping Daz would follow the same blueprint, given his recruiting connections. All I've seen is a lot of projects and not enough Arobs and Kee-Ayres.With a big win over Villanova, we can approach a 50/50 crowd for PSU.If so, we will make a lot more noise than they will… I'm thinking of 1975, when we both had 30K fans at FF and the Cherry and White pom-poms covered the entire stadium. That's what a 14-game winning streak will do for a program.

  13. Juice Granger is here and he's working out with the squad. In fact, he and Spencer Reid are here and I'm pretty sure the rest of the guys arrive the first week of July. I will pass out if Granger starts, though. Temple has NEVER had a QB go from JUCO to starter in first game … in fact, it took the great Walter Washington quite a few games before he got his first start.

  14. I'm watching it right now on TV… Pa is down 28-7 at halftime… ugh… I'm old enough to remember Pa. going toe-to-toe with the Texas All-Stars in this game.

  15. TFF,Giving a full-ride to Reid may not help the team, but it certainly provides a tremendous boost to the "program". Who will know Temple players better than the Eagles? And, think of how many of our players will be exposed to pro players…., working-out, transfer of knowledge, etc. This is a unique strategic move, and a great one by our coaches? How many BCS teams play in pro stadiums? How many Pro Head Coaches have a son playing in the same town? We are the only program in the nation who can take advantage of this very unique opportunity.

  16. TFF,I know that you really wanted Ryan Brumfield to be an owl, But its time to let it go. You and I both are waiting for the time when Temple starts winning head to head recruiting battles with Penn State or even Rutgers for that matter. However, RB was not that recruit. He is going to Eastern Michigan. I know he had an amazing high school career but its not like Golden offered him and he chose TU over Penn State and the Addazio came in and rescinded the scholarship. And while SA hasn't landed a four/ five start recruit yet he hasn't even coached a game yet. However, what i do like is that we already have 6 commits before Golden had his first commit last year. I also like that they are kids he thinks can help the program that are mostly local. Its think we give SA a chance to win some games and make good on his promises and hopefully finish strong after a great football season

  17. The next bench mark for Daz won't be the next big recruit (although it would be nice to get a Big 33 MVP like Adrian Robinson), it will be beating Villanova, 100-3. (OK, I'll settle for 55-3 and grudgingly settle for 35-14.) If he accomplishes any of the above type scores, we know we have something here. If he doesn't, we have some problems. It's that simple. We need to beat the crap out of Villanova and then build on that momemtum and AT LEAST grab 1 of 2 of Maryland and PSU.

  18. "Villanova's bid to get a spot has fallen through,"This is news to me…Tell me more!

  19. Villanova won't be getting a BE football invite. Not now. Not ever.If they come up with $521 million for a 70K state-of-the-art stadium like the one Temple plays in, they might be able to grab a BCS spot in about 20 years. Not before. Don't see that ever happening.
