great win today, and this is/will be a great season with a bowl game on the horizon. Villanova blocked Temple's admission into the Big East. The ACC is a non-starter, we sent feelers out last year.., our academics (SATs avg, admission %) are way below ACC thresholds. Idea: stay in the A-10 for all other sports and become a football independent? Start our own network, sign an exclusive TV agreement? Every conference is re-aligning, or getting raided except the MAC. Nobody wants anyone from the MAC. So, let's become an independent.., make our own 10-12 win schedule and become the "Boise St" of the East. the time is now.
thinking out loud…what could be the worst thing to happen this year – a MAC championship. DAZ would be one of the hottest coaches in the country if we win the MAC. How could we keep him, and what could we offer? What are the stats on MAC coaches the year after winning a championship? Our incoming recruiting class is toast now after Big Eastgate, no way any of the studs would stay when DAZ leaves.., look what happened when AG left. Let's go Independent!
the more and more I think about it, independance seems to be an option just above MAC play and just below football-only in CUSA or BE.The only tough thing is the challenge of scheduling. We could nail down Army and Navy (assuming both remain indy) for home and home, a 2-1 with ND, a 3-1 with PSU but finding other 1-1 deals could prove problematic and lead to 4- and 5-game home slates instead of the 6-7 we have now.Benefits of Indy?We could name (pretty much) any bowl we want with an 8-4 and not be slotted into a MAC deal that could get us shut out again in the bowl picture.Indy? The more and more I think about it, the more I like it.
Seems like every thing for the "Big Least" hinges on Boise State. If BS is smart, they would sick with the C-USA/Mointain merge. It makes better sense for their market. Temple Football beat up the 'Big Least' champ last year and I'm confident Temple can beat every 'Big Least' team this year. We're in the 4th largest maket, produce great numbers, yet the 'Big Least' is putting their eggs in Villa-no-go's basket? The "Big Least' leaders are their own worst enemies. The 'Big Least' is giving Villa-no-go way too much credit. They had one suprise (B-ball) season in 1986 and they have been living off of that game ever since. We should keep Villanova on the schedule, at least for next year. Just to beat the CRAP out of them one more time, just like we did this year. But instead of easing up on them them in the second half, beat them 76-0, like we could have done this year.'Villa-no-go'….what a bunch of whining wussies!
I am really hesitant about going independent. As it is now, schedueling would be nigh impossible, but if we end up with four 16 team confrences, wont it be even harder? I dunno, i just feel like we havent quite arivved yet (despite our defense and rushing numbers), and that the mac has been a good platform for building. Wouldnt this also take years to execute? I doubt the MAC lets us leave before 2014, and coming up with the 8 or 9 or 10 games we need to fill the sheduel would be really hard. But i do like the idea of beating bad to mediocore teams from power confrences. I would love our scheduel looking like Nova, ND, PSU, Navy, Duke, Iowa State, Maryland, Vandy, Purdue, Northwestern, Washington or Washington state, Boise, or Army. But i think we need more time to build the recruiting pipelines and fan base. As it is now, I cant imagine a TV deal with comcast would be much better than what we get now, we might also lose our 2 MAC weeknight games on ESPN, and I think the better scheduel might be washed out by the lack of a confrence championship game and bowl tie-ins. Do you think we have enough ammo to negotiate a tie in with a bowl as we sit now? Also: I understand Nova blocking us for all-sports, but how come we were blocked for football only? What exactly happened? Is any chance of Temple football going to the big east dead? It seems Boise and Navy and Airforce will say no and SMU and Houston are sitting on the fence. If thats the case, are we in? DO we want to be in a BE w/o boise and the service academies?
On friday and saturday the story I kept seeing repeated by traditional reporters citing unnamed sources was that Nova blocked TU as an all sports member in the big east with the help of some basketball schools but it was unclear/ no addressed why TU wasnt invited a football only (I think i read a quote from a source in the Nova admin saying they were no opposed to football only). Then today ive heard unsourced rumblings that rutgers ad tim pernetti blocked tu from joining as a football only member, possibly with the help of uconn. If you could shed any light on this, i would be in your debt.
I haven’t thought about it until this AM but it makes sense. The BE made their stance clear, TU is an afterthought, if the BE doesn’t want TU on the first round of offers then TU shouldn’t want the BE. It’s a house of cards waiting to fall anyway. Other than a BCS conference there is no place for the football team to go that’s a step up. Independent may be a good place for TU football for a few years to see how it all shakes out. The team could get more national exposure, which will help recruiting and hopefully keep Daz around a few more years. If they can finish 8 and 4 and get a strong bowl bid then its mission accomplished. My only question is can they sell a TV package that would cover the money they are receiving now from the MAC? Maybe a few ACC teams for a home and home? How about creating a local riverly with Rutgers? Hopefully some nationally recognized teams will help fill the Linc. I would like to see Villanova on the schedule each year for nothing more than the bad blood that’s developed. I’m not an expert at this by any means and I’m sure there is a hole in the theory, but with the team on the rise as they are is maybe being an independent football is the proper next step?
Those close to university officials inform some influential voting members are openly questioning the decision several years ago to pursue football on the big stage. One official has disturbing past ties to nova. Word is the AD and the coaching staff are gone. IMO the university failed to keep a finger on the pulse of the college football environment and failed to make timely decisions to achieve our strategic goals. Additionally, the dire financial status of both the university and state are not helping. I don't think anyone fully comprehends the tenuous position we find ourselves. Best case, the university keeps both feet on the floor and we go Independent. Worst case, after a few more wins Daz lands a new job and our coaches, recruits, dreams and aspirations vanish. Why is this the worst case? Because we will lose our football program at the current level of competition. In five years or less, Nova will be playing in a BCS conference and Temple may not even be playing…., we are truly at that moment in TU Football history.
I think the "worst case" is premature. I have a feeling that the dominoes are going to fall and the BE will come to Temple. Navy is lukewarm at best. Mids have a sweetheart deal as an Indy now that is better than the BE. At that point, Temple will be in the position to say "all sports or nothing" and the BE will have to accept.Nobody is talking to Daz, who seems fully committed to the Temple mission and about 10x more sincere than Golden ever was. All you have to do is watch that video of Daz pleading for fans to come to the Toledo game. I've never seen a more sincere video. As far as the crowd, 25K for a MAC team (all but 200 or so Temple fans) represented a big step up. Remember, our first Nova game drew only 28K. I was really encouraged by the crowd. The cold, hard truth is that the only thing that will energize Temple fans into coming for the MAC games is a jolt to the system, like a win over Penn State. Coming close is just not good enough anymore.
as far as RU, my sources say that RU wanted Temple in for all sports in order to bolster the hoops brand which was irrevocably hurt by the loss of Cuse/Pitt. Temple hoops cuts that loss in half.Football schools want Temple in for all sports. Small Catholic schools don't want Temple in for anything despite what Nova might be saying to save city face.
I cant believe the Big East didnt take us. Not only is our football program growing at an incredibly rate and on an insane trajectory (1-22 in 05 and 06 to winning 20 of our last 27 games), but check out what are average attendance has been year over year: 34,372 = 2011 20,515 = 2010 17,379 = 2009 15,582 = 200
DAZ and Heater are great coaches. When we win the MAC and they get offers to double their salaries why do we think they will say no? they will do what is best for them and their families. TU sold DAZ and crew a story about us going big time in a BCS conference. DAZ bought it, and sold that same story to our incoming recruiting class. What do we think will happen when they find out the story is not true?
Well the good news is that the next hard game will be against Toledo. Travel well Owls! Since BE is blocked C-USA will make an offer, but it might be an all sport offer. C-USA and travel to god knows wherever or Boise of the East? Tough call. Fun times in NCAAFB.
The story is neither true nor untrue. It was true (for Temple) last week, untrue (for Temple) today and might be true (or untrue) for Temple tomorrow. The only thing "true" about the story is that the ending has not been written yet. When Navy and Boise State hand in their drafts (and that could be months, not weeks) only then we will know.In the meantime, we buy some precious time needed to go 11-2.
I think Mike is correct that nobody knows how this will play out. Being an SEC fan, I read today that Missouri is almost now certainly headed our way. The ripple effect touches Temple. Big 12 will be down to nine and will then poach more BE schools. This remains a very, very fluid situation. My hunch is that Temple eventually gets an all sport BE invite. If so, they need to take it. Their best option. It is pathetic that Villanova may be blocking Temple on this.
True – there will be a few more "surprises" before it is over. Lets be pragmatic, Daz needs to win out and we need get great crowds – who knows what will happen. Going the independent route does not seem like a realistic option – at least now. Win the MAC and lets go from there.
So I started writing a reply and it got so long I had to post it on the Owlbulance.com site ashere. In short, I don't feel like the Big East is strong enough anymore to hold an AQ in the future. Especially without Boise State. Anyone else feel this way too? Why jump on a sinking ship.
Unfortunately, Josh, the BE is guaranteed BCS status through 2015 if it maintains membership or gains in this off-season. Right now, it's a little short but "overbooking" with 12 guards against further raiding. So a new conference or even indy status does nothing for Temple like a seat at the BE dinner table.Anything else is MacDonalds.
From what I've heard and seen, the BCS cares about one thing and one thing only, money. The Big East's contract could be 50 years long, if they don't start putting a good team, with fans, on the field for their BCS games, the contract could and should be voided. Contracts in college football have been about as meaningless as Villanova's football team this season. Solid Brewster's Millions reference btw.
but getting in the BE buys us a seat at the BCS Le Bec Fin table at least through 2015. Otherwise, we eat big MACs until then.
