Well, the Temple defense is frightful; to other teams this is delightful; guess to whom the blame must go…Phil Snow, Phil SNOW, PHIL SNOW!!!
Our boy, AL GOLDEN, has Miami ranked #7. Canes are #TempleTUFF. Way to go AL! Best of luck vs. FSU!
Giving up 45 points in the 2nd Half to SMU (59 points total). Phil Snow = #TempleWEAK.
We’re not winning because we’re not exhibiting the “Temple TUFF” qualities instilled under Golden (yes, I realize Matt Rhule was here then, but so was Al and Mark D’Onofrio). We should have run Harper and Zaire behind our 305-pound line, put Parthemore at tight end and Coyer at fullback and knocked them off the ball. That would have meant 7-, 8- 9-minute drives in the second half and Gilbert would have had the ball 3 or 4 series, not the 7 series (all TDS) that he did. With 28-7 and 28-14 leads, you can do something like that. We don’t even have that capability in our playbook. When your defense is coached by Phil Snow, you have to do everything you can to help him out.
When a team has nothing to lose, it’s time to try anything and everything. I said, as you have, from the beginning of the season that Coyer should be used as running back. At a minimum, he should be touching the ball at least ten times a game. Either this coaching staff doesn’t have the imagination to employ him in various ways or they’re scared. If they’re scared then it’s time for them to go. Can’t tell me that Coyer is too valuable as a blocker to move him. Frankly, they could use almost any reserve lineman to block, which would free Coyer up.
As far as imagination goes, when Deloach was moved to defense in camp as a punishment and got six sacks, a coach with any imagination would have used his skills in a game. Not these coaches. I remember Bruce Arians using John Rienstra on defense at times and he was great. I know Deloach subsequently got hurt but these coaches would never have used him on defense because they simply can’t think outside the box. Hell, it took them five games to change the kick returners. Can’t tell me that they couldn’t have better utilized the talent that currently exists on this team.
I think Matt Rhule’s interpretation of “nothing to lose” is going for it on 4th and 4 from your own 20. Bad interpretation, IMHO. To me, why not have Coyer throw passes off fakes? What do you have to lose? You’ve got a guy who can throw the ball potentially able to play two other positions and he NEVER throws off a fake? That should have happened a couple of times a game. You are not utilizing the UNIQUE talents of your players (except, of course, for All-State QB Jalen Fitzpatrick and he got to throw in the EIGHTH game of the season; as Derrick Coleman once said, “Whoopty-Damn-Do”)
John, you clearly haven’t been given enough ‘RhuleAid’ to drink…don’t you know that Daz left the cupboard bare, this team still has MAC talent (humm isn’t a team with MAC talent ranked in the top 25 right now)…..LOL. Then of course you have that great Phil Snow defense, with he has no talent to work with here, nobody ever recruits good defensive players at EMU so you really can’t look at what he did there, the apologists don’t really have any answer for his poor defenses at Washington. Trouble is I don’t think Rhule is going to recruit the same caliber of players Snow had at Arizona State in the same numbers. His ’96 and ’97 defenses had 7 players go to the NFL, 3 consensus All Americans and the Morris Trophy winner, which goes to the best d-lineman in the Pac-10. I don’t think this the imagination to go for broke and think outside the box, there building that long term system don’t you know.

Just 4 solid years of recruiting and Temple will be ready to make their mark in the AAC
don’t know why that came out twice but it’s worth repeating, so I’ll keep it in there.
I actually think it’s not being scared …. it’s much worse: They don’t know how to use the talents of their individual players (Coyer running, Fitzpatrick passing, Coyer throwing off fakes, Deon Miller getting the fade in the end zone, Cody Booth as a tackle eligible receiver, etc., etc., etc.). This is shocking to me since one of the things I thought Matt Rhule would bring here is a knowledge of the personnel and the courage to use them in the best spots. That hasn’t happened. It’s Game No. 9. That’s more than a bad job. It’s an incompetent job.
I think they are concerned about ball security and that’s why they put Ryan Alderman in there. When I talked to Ryan after the Army game I thanked him for not fair-catching because I told him that’s got to be an offensive play for Temple. We’re not good enough (before SMU) on offense for us to be giving up that play with a fair catch. That said, love to see someone with Matty Brown’s speed back there.
There is someone who is faster and bigger than Matt Brown , who is playing on special teams , but not as a return man. Hassan Dixon is his name. He came close, twice , to blocking a punt in the Army game. Not sure if he saw any action against SMU though. Don’t know why Rhule isn’t utilizing the speed of the fastest player on the team.
Zach Dixon’s kid. Fastest player in the team. Love to see the 40-yard dash race between him and 4.34 Khalif Herbin. (Hassan did get into the game against SMU.)
Mike, a little too fast on the keyboard earlier, sorry for 2 posts.
No worries. Thought it was a system glitch.
For those who want changes in the football program — and who wouldn’t? — today’s news that Kevin Clark has been named permanent AD is a God-send. Kevin is a tremendous administrator who does not suffer fools. IMHO, the Owls now have much stronger athletic leadership in the corner office. If only he had been on board before this whole realignment nonsense.
If what you say is true, I don’t see ANY WAY Kevin keeps Matt Rhule at 1-11. I have my doubts, though. He looks like a bean counter from his resume. That means, “We can’t afford to pay Rhule and a new guy (preferably Dave Clawson/Todd Bowles/Pete Lembo, that type of guy).” Best case scenario and the one I’m hoping for: Matt goes out and wins four straight and keeps his job and proves to us doubters that he really can coach. Seriously doubt it. Much more likely we go 1-11 than 5-7, but I think we steal one more game and go 2-10. In that case, this season is a disaster in my mind. Winning to me is everything. After 3 straight winning seasons, two straight losing seasons with all this talent on the roster (and there is enough talent to beat Fordham and Idaho and SMU), is hard to stomach.
I suspect you do not mean bean counter in a pejorative manner as Clark is indeed a high finance administrator who knows the difference between value and cheap. He will quickly reorganize Temple’s athletic priorities.
