The worst of all 3-9 seasons

For the third-straight year, Temple University finished an abysmal 3-9 in football.

That’s the only thing that matters.

Not injuries, not coaching staff changes, not losing recruiting battles.

Not nothing.

This team without E.J. Warner has been a complete and utter joke. Congratulations to E.J. If this is the end, it was a pleasure to be a fan of yours (I won’t be once you leave but that’s the same thought process I have for every Temple player who leaves the nest.)

The bottom line is the bottom line.

Temple lost, 45-21, on Friday to a Memphis team that it lost to, 24-3, a year ago.

Whatever was gained on the offensive end was more than offset by the loss on the defensive end.

That’s been the story all season.

Basically, it was the same thing on a different day. This happened to be on a Friday in front of an ESPN audience. Most embarrassments came on a Saturday in front of ESPN+ viewers. A Thursday ESPN show ended up in a 48-26 loss to Tulsa (a team it lost 29-16 in 2022) and multiple Saturdays resulted in worse outcomes. Every single game against same opponents Temple performed at a worse level in head coach Stan Drayton’s second season than it did in his first.

Think about that.

In Al Golden’s first season, he was 1-11. In his second, he was 4-8.

In Matt Rhule’s first season, he was 2-10. In his second, he was 6-6.

That’s the way this thing is supposed to work.

It didn’t this year. Every opponent on Temple’s schedule in 2023 performed at a higher level against the Owls than they did in 2022.

The only outlier was the Navy game.

That’s not supposed to be the way things work when you spend $2.5 million to hire a new coach.

In the press conference afterward, Temple head coach Stan Drayton blamed injuries.

He didn’t blame a coaching staff that sat on its hands in the portal instead of bringing in 20 potential new starters from P5, JUCO and FCS teams. The only starters that needed to keep their jobs were quarterback E.J. Warner, linebacker Jordan Magee and (under a DC who knew what he was doing) LB Layton Jordan.

He didn’t point the finger to himself for not conducting a nationwide search for a defensive coordinator instead of picking the first friend to come to his mind. A great defense gives you a chance … chance .. to stay in every single game. D.J. Elliott outperformed Everett Withers in all but one game of Drayton’s first year without the benefit that goes with that additional year.

That’s more of an indictment of Withers than it is praise of Elliott, who is now the LB coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

A poor defense can get you blown out on any given day.

An argument can be made of the three consecutive 3-9 seasons, this is the worst. First, the 3-9 Carey season at least had a win over a ranked team (Memphis) and this one did not.

Last year’s 3-9 team showed some fight in their last two games and this one did not.

Afterward, Warner was asked if he was leaving and said: “Please don’t ask me that.”

(If that doesn’t mean he’s gone, I don’t know what does. I hope he stays but I’m not an idiot. My educated guess is that he ends up at a place like James Madison in a couple of weeks.)

If no big firing is made on Monday (and we’re talking DC here because we don’t expect Drayton to be fired), Temple is telling the nation that finishing 3-9 every year is perfectly fine. Drayton is telling you he prefers a comfortable friendship with Everett Withers over winning football games at Temple.

That’s not perfectly fine with me. Nor should it be with you.

Otherwise, every Saturday next year will be the same Groundhog Day it has been every Saturday for the last three seasons.

A reminder that the opener next year is with Oklahoma, not Bucknell nor Akron. The urgency to get big-time players in here should have been last offseason, not this one.

  1. Mike, agree that the offense was a joke in the games Warner was out but really given the shape of this program right now what is the difference without him 0-11, 1-10 versus 3-9. At this point, I don’t see much improvement over the next 2 seasons with the current recruiting outlook for the team and the utter incompetence of this HC. A program like JMU or another top G5 team would but a good situation for him. I know I’m in the minority but don’t see him being a P5 QB, especially if he needs to compete for a job with only 2years eligibility left. If he does hit the portal so much for Drayton building a culture, this becomes no better than the Carey regime. On another area, is it possible to get out of the Oklahoma series, the $$$ aren’t worth the potential of having an 80, 90 point lose.

    • They would have been ready for Oklahoma if they had a Curt Cignetti or Jerry Kill as their head coach. If Arthur is smart, he would get on the phone with them and say, “Err, I made a mistake. I should have hired Jerry Kill but I hired Stan. Can you work with me to find an opponent we can give you and you can give us?” Since this is Temple, I expect nothing to get done. I don’t expect Stan to get fired on Monday (he should), I don’t expect Stan to fire Everett on Monday (he should). I expect full radio silence from Temple when it comes to football.

      • Unfortunately I think you are probably spot in which is really bad news for this program for however long it is still around. I now you have previously said the university won’t drop football but at this point I don’t know about that. Having this bad feeling that it may not be for a couple of years but the other shoe is going to drop.

      • Probably will give Stan the balance of the contract which coincides with the Linc contract. If no progress is shown, I would not be surprised if Temple football goes the way of Temple baseball sadly.

  2. One last thing if Warner does enter the transfer portal can the team please stop with the single digit, it will have become a joke if over the last 2 seasons your best offensive player and one of your best defensive players transfer out

    • Completely agree. No Temple player with eligibility left should be a single digit. Should all be reserved for players who remained in program until their final season, and only THEN do they get a single digit.

  3. If three consecutive 3-9 seasons doesn’t call for major changes then I don’t know what does! The commentators covering Friday’s game showed a clip from that unforgettable 2015 year with Kirk Herbstreit and College Game Day plus a an enthusiastic packed Linc for the Notre Dame game. I still can’t believe we have since sunk to the very bottom of the FBS world of college football. We are not getting any younger you know! Check this out:

  4. I know we want and expect more now-a-days, but these 3 win seasons are better than the consecutive 2-0 win seasons from the Bobby Wallace days and even periods before that. Its no consolation but IS a reminder that Temple has a bad football history overall. Drayton won’t be fired since Temple is already paying out for the Carey debacle. What really is mystifying is why Temple puts up with this crap over and over – the higher ups just don’t seem to care, at all. The high light periods show that Temple can be successful if decent decisions are made, like hiring good coaches. Withers must go and if not Drayton is a fool. Hell, just give Withers a fancy title but bring in a sold DC at least. This really could have been a decent season if the D had performed. If EJ leaves we’ll will be back to those 0-2 win seasons. Please stay Mr. Warner.

    • The BOT is not 100% behind Temple’s football program. The current situation is evidence of that. Until that happens, look for more of the same. After those glorious 2015/16 seasons, many of us thought Temple football had finally “turned the corner”. Nope!

  5. Black uni’s didn’t do anything for the Jets yesterday either. Do the players make that call on what will be worn?

  6. IMHO, Drayton has not figured out how he wants to win. What type of team is he recruiting for? Throwing over 30 times per game will never be TUFB. Ditch the simulated pressure defense and recruit big DTs to stop the run, Ioannidis. Not apparent what Drayton is building.

His game management skills are terrible. Worst use of timeouts in recent TUFB history. The position coach pedigree has too many warts.

    • Really can’t disagree with anything you say, in fact saying game management skills are terrible may be an understatement. My feeling with regards to what type of team he is recruiting for centers on his QB, that is if EJ doesn’t cut and run to the portal. Warner is not going to run an RPO based offense and I don’t think he has the accuracy to continue putting it up 40 times a game. He seems best suited for the “old school” TUFB pro set style offense. Don’t see any indication that this staff is going in that direction. Having an extra back in or a TE functioning more in an H-back role I would think that would have to benefit Warner. Don’t know we’re as bad as Collins trying to fit Russo, who I think was more talented than Warner, into a spread, RPO offense but I don’t get the sense Drayton any real idea how to best utilize Warner’s skills. Recruit more to run a power run game, but I’m beginning to really wonder if Drayton was that good of a RB coach or just happened to be coaching some great RBs.

  7. Temple should be cleaning house with this football staff. Temple students, alumni, and fans have continually been embarrassed by the football team’s results over the last four seasons. Only 10 wins in the past four seasons, and only 9 wins over the last 36 games. Then people wonder why more people do not show up for games or donate to the program. The door swings both ways. Does the Temple administration and Board of Trustees even care about Temple Football? Enough is enough.

  8. that’s it. was a nice ride with about 32 years of 2 season Tickets, but we are done, done, done , nothing for next year.
This was plain horrible, HC doesn’t know what he is doing.

The real culprit is the AD, another fraud, it is evident now.
How the hell did HE get this appointment anyway ?

    • I’m afraid many season ticket holders feel the same way as you do. The current situation with Temple football is a complete mess. Let me say this one more time: the university administration is not serious about the program. If this does not change, I don’t see how it can continue for very long. Student interest must be at an all time low. Then there is the stadium issue, the NIL and the player transfer portal (of which the current HC has not properly taken advantage). The costs for fielding an FBS college football program must be enormous these days. Where does the money come from if so few tickets are sold? Will the school renew the contract to play in Jeffrey Lurie’s facility? Will an on campus stadium ever happen? So many questions. Hoping for the best.

    • Amen. AJ and Drayton signed multi-year contracts worth millions. They will leave campus (hopefully sooner rather than later) as millionaires. More good money after bad…, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Will wisdom prevail for the 2025 season?

    • We need another Matt Rhule to get us back to Temple TUFF! Can Stan Drayton fill that role? So far – not so good.

  9. With such poor performance over consecutive seasons with predictions of improvement lacking, and attendance dwindling, would AAC do like Big East and ask TU to leave?

  10. Simply amazing! Every team hires grad assistants to pour over stats in hopes of finding a competitive advantage. Stats aren’t the answer but they are instrumental to the process.

How many FBS teams in the last 7 yrs (portal/NIL era) have hired an RB position coach for HC? And, what has been the result of those hires? AJ should have hired grad assistants to do his homework. The BOT should have hired grad assistants before hiring AJ. I’ll take stats over good ole boy winks everyday.

AJ, Drayton, and Withers need to go. If not, they need to fire all the grad assistants.
