You nailed it Mike – you pay to win. The world of amateur college sports no longer exists. The transfer portal and the NIL have done away with it. Who knows were we go from here. Anyway, good luck to Coach Keeler and the Temple Owls!
Yes, you must pay to win. And, teams that pay more, win more.
Every season the B1G and the SEC get closer to being one. It’s going to get worse for G5 teams. The ripple effect of the inevitable will touch every program.
Fortunately Temple appears to understand the correlation between TUFB success and brand power; and, brand power and enrollment.
Keeler’s coffers are substantially more than his predecessors. Let’s all wish he spends wisely.
Has the portal/NIL madness leached down to D3?
Fortunately, no. Drake’s hoops team has 4 starters who played for a national champion DII team last year (under the current Drake coach). Don’t imagine they made any money at DII and doubt very seriously Drake has more NIL money than Temple. People are succeeding outside the NIL box but you have to get creative like signing a head coach who did a lot with little.
